This bowl presents a deep, high-walled form with a slightly everted mouth rim and a broad, low foot ring. In the center of the interior base, the character su (壽, longevity) is painted in underglaze blue in a free, brushed hand, encircled by a double-line border — a composition at once simple and auspicious. The glaze is a white porcelain glaze with a faint suffusion of pale blue, limpid and evenly lustrous — qualities indicative of the finest grade of production. These bowls were produced at the Bunwon-ri kiln in Gwangju during the first half of the nineteenth century as official wares for court use, their decoration bearing an earnest prayer for longevity — a wish expressed with the quiet dignity and composed refinement that characterizes the best Bunwon porcelain of the period.
